After the death of her grandmother, Anna Schapiro’s narrator picks up a recording device and travels to Russia, Israel, and the United States. From the voices of her Soviet-Jewish family, «Fühlen Sie sich wie zu Hause, aber vergessen Sie dabei nicht, dass Sie zu Gast sind» evolves as a fragmented novel of an era. In Ilija Matusko’s «Jugo» the protagonist sits at his desk composing a reluctant love letter to his father, who after thirty years in Germany is undertaking a painful return to his Croatian homeland. Both debut novels play with fiction and biography, making the presence of the past palpable.
