Jeffrey Eugenides’ first novel »The Virgin Suicides«, translated into German by Mechtild Sandberg-Ciletti and Eike Schönfeld, was published some 30 years ago. Sofia Coppola made a film of the Lisbon sisters’ account of suicide, starring Kirsten Dunst. Today, the novel is a phenomenon on TikTok. It was followed by two more novels and numerous short stories. Eugenides talks about his beginnings as a writer, contexts of writing and publishing in the U.S. today, and current projects.
