Susanne Stemmler, born in 1968, is a specialist in Romance studies and is director of the departments of literature, science, and society at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt (HKW) in Berlin. She graduated with a study of the European perspective on the Arab world (tr: The Topography of Vision. A phenomenology of Literary Orientalism in nineteenth Century France). She teaches French literature at Düsseldorf University, was a post-doctoral fellow at the Centre for Metropolitan Studies in Berlin and other places, including Columbia University in New York.
