born in Berlin in 1937, is one of the most important German theater and film directors. His career took him from the Munich Kammerspiele via Zurich and Bremen to Berlin, where he assembled a top-class ensemble at the Schaubühne am Halleschen Ufer and created legendary productions. As director of drama at the Salzburg Festival [1991–1997], he also turned to opera. In the 2000s, he directed major projects such as the staging of the complete »Faust« and a ten-hour »Wallenstein«. Stein, who has been awarded the Order of Merit 1st Class of the Federal Republic of Germany, among other honors, is now a member of the board of trustees of the Akademie für gesprochenes Wort in Stuttgart and lives near Rome.
