Nora Bossong

Nora Bossong was born in Bremen in 1982. She studied cultural studies, philosophy, and literature in Leipzig and Potsdam, at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, and at La Sapienza in Rome. She completed her studies with a master’s thesis on the element of evil in David Lynch’s works.
Her début novel »Gegend« (tr: Rural landscape) appeared in 2006. In »Webers Protokoll« (2009; tr: Weber’s Protocol) Bossong tells the story of a diplomat from Nazi Germany stationed in Milan. As his embezzlement of funds for the German school becomes known, he discovers a source of income in helping Jews who are fleeing to Switzerland to obtain the necessary documents. In her suspenseful novel, Bossong explores the mechanisms of power and reveals a game of deception and self-delusion. In her family saga »Gesellschaft mit beschränkter Haftung« (2012; tr: Limited Liability Company) Bossong addresses the topic of corporate culture, including its ethical and social demands. In »36.9°« (2015; En. »Gramsciʼs Fall«, 2019) she portrays the Italian philosopher, politician and journalist Antonio Gramsci. In her most recent novel »Schutzzone« (2019; tr: Protection zone) she tells of the private relationships of a UN employee against the backdrop of the big political stage – and of the possibility of reconciliation after conflicts in the past. As a poet she also demonstrates great acuity of observation, her texts combine observations and reflections about the observer. For »Sommer vor den Mauern« (2011; tr: Summer beyond the town walls) she was honored with the 2012 Peter-Huchel-Preis. »Nora Bossong is not only a poet, but also a brilliant author of prose. Her nonchalance, humor, astute aplomb seem to extend to all areas of literature«, said Tobias Lehmkuhl in his laudation. »Rotlicht« (2017, tr. Red light), is an account of prostitution in Germany that is permeated with essayistic and philosophical reflections about pleasure, desire and money.
Nora Bossong has received numerous grants and awards, including the Thomas-Mann-Preis 2020 and the Joseph-Breitbach-Preis 2020. Her journalistic articles appear in »DIE ZEIT«, »taz« and »FAZ online«, among others.
