completed his doctorate (German Studies) at the Humboldt-University zu Berlin in 1998. Subsequently, he was a scientific employee and coordinator of the DFG project »Literatur- und Kulturgeschichte des Fremden 1880–1918« (tr. Literature and culture history of the foreign). After holding a position as Visiting Assistant Professor in Stanford, he went to Frankfurt a. M. as a lecturer. Since 2017, he has been Professor for Recent German Literature at the Keio University in Tokyo.
