born in 1949, is an independent economist and commentator. He worked as chief economist at UBS Investment Bank from 1995 to 2016. His focus is on China’s political economy. In 2018, he published »Red Flags: Why Xiʼs China Is In Jeopardy«, in which he examines China’s current economic system and challenges at home and abroad in the light of the system of governance championed by Xi Jinping. He is an associate fellow at Oxford University’s China Centre and at the School of Oriental and African Studies in London.
