Édouard Louis was born in 1992 in the French region of Picardy. His autobiographical debut novel »The End of Eddy« [2017, trans. Michael Lucey], in which he recounts his story as a gay teenager growing up in the working-class milieu of the French provinces, became an international bestseller. His autobiographical essay »Who Killed My Father« [2019, trans. Lorin Stein] deals with the relationship between the author and his father. He describes the process of understanding his father, whose behavior was shaped by anger and frustration, as the result of social and structural injustice. Louis also devotes his writing to his mother. In »A Woman’s Battles and Transformations« [2022, trans. Tash Aw], he tells of her struggle against poverty and patriarchal violence, which she endured for much of her life, but also about the feelings her liberation evoked in him: joy and relief. In »Monique s’évade« [2024], he continues this writing, recounting her emancipation and the way mother and son had to come to terms with their shared past. In his latest autofictional novel »L’effondrement« [2024], Louis addresses the early death of his older brother, thereby bringing, by his own account, his family narratives to a close. It deals with failure and addiction, but also with dreaming and hoping for a better future that is far from certain. The novel »History of Violence« [2018, trans. Lorin Stein] and the essay »Who Killed My Father« have been adapted for the stage and performed, among other venues, at Berlin’s Schaubühne under the direction of Thomas Ostermeier. Édouard Louis lives in Paris.
