Jewhen Swerstjuk

born in the Ukraine in 1928, he is an essayist, translator, literary critic, poet and doctor of philosophy. Since the 1960s, he has been a leading personality in the intellectual resistance to discrimination against Ukrainian culture. He organised the publication of forbidden texts (»Samizdat«), an act for which he was sentenced to seven years in a prison camp (1973-1980). After Ukraine attained independence, he was awarded the distinguished Schewtschenko Prize.
