Jean Ziegler was born in Bern, Switzerland in 1934. He studied law, sociology and political sciences and lectured in sociology at the University of Geneva. His numerous publications are commonly dedicated to the economic and political situation of third world (»Wie kommt der Hunger in die Welt?«, 2002), but also that of his native country (»Die Schweiz wäscht weißer«, 1992). In 2002 he became a UN Special Correspondent on food and nutrition. His analysis »Das Imperium der Schande: Der Kampf gegen Armut und Unterdrückung« (t: The Empire of Shame: The Fight against Poverty and Suppression) was published in 2005.
