born in 1949 in Moscow, is a cultural scholar, Germanist, and co-founder of the Russian human rights organization Memorial. For over three decades, she played a key role in shaping the organization’s historical education work through innovative educational programs and oral history projects. After Memorial was forcibly dissolved by Russian authorities, she continued her commitment to remembrance culture in exile through the Berlin-based initiative Zukunft Memorial, founded in 2023. She also curates projects for the Buchenwald Memorial and the organization Action Reconciliation Service for Peace. She is the editor of volumes on Stalinism, totalitarianism, the Gulag, and memory politics. In recognition of her longstanding dedication, she has received numerous awards, including the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany (2005), the Goethe Medal (2017), the Austrian Cross of Honour for Science and Art (2019), and the Marion Dönhoff Prize (2022). Memorial was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2022.
