Elke Schmitter

born 1961 in Krefeld, she studied Philosophy in Munich. From 1992−1994 she was editor in chief of the »taz«, and later a freelance journalist for »Die Zeit« and the »Süddeutsche Zeitung«, and is cultural editor with the »Spiegel« since 2001. In 1989 she published a volume of essays on Heinrich Heine. Her first novel, »Mrs. Sartoris«, was released in 2000 and has been translated into 21 languages. Amongst other novels, the last one being »Vera’s Daughter« (2006), she has also published two volumes of poetry. Elke Schmitter lives in Berlin.
