
Carlo Masala

born in 1968 in Cologne, is a political scientist and expert on armed conflicts. From 1988 to 1992, he studied political science, German studies, and Romance philology. He earned his doctorate in 1996 and received his »venia legendi« in political science in December 2002. In early 2004, Masala worked at the NATO Defense College in Rome, before accepting a professorship in International Politics at the University of the Bundeswehr in Munich in spring 2007. Since 2024, he has served as director of the university’s Center for Intelligence and Security Studies (CISS). Masala is co-editor of the »Zeitschrift für Internationale Beziehungen« (Journal of International Relations) and the »Zeitschrift für Strategische Analysen« (Journal of Strategic Analysis). He is also a member of the scientific advisory board of the Federal Academy for Security Policy, served as a permanent expert for the German Bundestag’s inquiry commission on the Afghanistan mission, and was a member of the advisory board for the 2024 Science Year at the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. He is a full member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities and sits on the board of the Hermann Ehlers Foundation. Carlo Masala is the author of numerous books on global security policy. Since 2018, he has also co-hosted the podcast »Sicherheitshalber«. In 2023, he was awarded the Lichtenberg Medal in Gold by the Göttingen Academy of Sciences and Humanities and received the Rohde Prize from the University of the Bundeswehr for his scholarly work and contributions to science communication. He lives in Leipzig.
