We introduce the authors of the 22nd ilb – with questions about writing, reading and unfinished reading. Today with Elisa Shua Dusapin, who tells us, where to find her favorite bookstore.

Confession time: Which major classic have you started… but not finished?
The books of Marcel Proust.

The age-old question: hardback or paperback? And why?
Paperback, because it is lighter and I can bring more in my suitcase [I’m always travelling].

The essential question: bookmarks or dog ears?
Bookmarks!

Which book is on your nightstand just now?
»A Luminous Republic« by Andrés Barba.

Which is your favorite book store in the whole world?
A very small book store in a Swiss village called Saint-Ursanne, near the Doubs river.

Who was your greatest discovery of the year so far? And why?
Jón Kalman Stefánsson. I haven’t read with so much pleasure for a long time.

If you were allowed to read only one book for the rest of your life, what would it be?
»The Lover« by Marguerite Duras.

Where do you prefer to write, and why?
Alone, surrounded by nature. I need absolute calm.

Do you read your own books after they’ve been published?

Never. Only if I have to read them during conferences.

We look forward to welcoming Elisa Shua Dusapin to the international literature festival berlin on September 14 and 15 with her books »Winter in Sokcho« and »The Pachinko Parlour«. Further information about the events can be found here.
