The international literature festival berlin [ilb] calls upon cinemas, schools, universities, media, cultural institutions and private persons to join Worldwide Screenings of Sergei Loznitsa’s films »Maidan« and »Donbass« on May 9, 2022 – Europe Day.
»Maidan« captures the events and speeches of the people who protested in Kyiv in the winter of 2013/ 2014 against the government of former President Viktor Yanukovych. It reconstructs the development from peaceful rallies to bloody street battles between activists and the police up to Yanukovych’s escape to Russia in February 2014. It was the birth of the new Ukraine, which is now threatened in its existence by Russia’s criminal war. »Donbass« shows a country at war, pulverised between informal power structures, corruption and fake news. For this film, Loznitsa received the section prize for Best Director at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival.
We also support the director in his dispute with the Ukrainian Film Institute, which expelled him a week ago for confirming his participation in a film festival in Nantes, which features Russian directors, such as Kirill Serebrennikov. We believe that the Ukrainian Film Institute’s actions run against the Ukrainian struggle for freedom and call for a reversal of this decision to exclude Sergei Loznitsa. A general boycott of Russian directors and Russian art is neither in the interest of Ukraine nor in the interest of freedom of expression and tolerance as we want to live it in our democracies. Our cause can only be about boycotting the Putin-loyal lackeys of the art and culture scene. Not only in Russia, but worldwide!
With the worldwide screening of the films by Sergei Loznitsa, we want to commemorate the Ukrainian struggle for democracy and freedom in 2013 and 2014, and point out that war has long since become an everyday occurrence in eastern Ukraine. About 15,000 people have died in the clashes so far. With our action we want to underline our sympathy and solidarity with the people living in Ukraine – as well as the sharp protest against Putin’s dictatorship.
We call for participation in the worldwide film screenings of »Maidan« and »Donbass«. This can be done privately, in cinemas, cultural centres, theatres or schools. The license for the screening rights needs to be obtained individually from the distributor. We gladly provide you with information on how this can be done – don’t hesitate to contact us.
Institutions and individuals who would like to participate with a screening on May 9, 2022, are asked to send us the following information by April 25, 2022: Names of the organisers, venue, time, participating actors, event language, link to your website if applicable (worldwidescreening@literaturfestival.com). The ilb will announce the events on its website, press and on social media.
