When a deaf boy is shot in the street by a soldier in the occupied city of Vasenka, the inhabitants resist by communicating only in sign language. On the gates of the soldiers’ barracks is written in chalk: »NOBODY CAN HEAR YOU«. In Ilya Kaminsky’s volume »Deaf Republic«, which won the Los Angeles Times Literary Award in 2020, silence becomes legible, poetic material. It opens a space of imaginary sounds and a powerful silence that opposes war.
