Telling the story of the First Nations is the mission of Michel Jean, himself an Innu and one of Canada’s most important indigenous authors. In his works »Maikan«, »Atuk« and »Kukum«, which are now also available in German translation, he describes the traditional way of life of the nomadic peoples in the northeast of North America – and its end. For the government’s goal was to wipe out the indigenous cultures – with devastating consequences for the affected populations.
