After the death of his father, 15-year-old Charley is left to fend for himself. He works at a racetrack and finds a friend in the racehorse »Lean on Pete«. When the animal is set to be sold to a butcher, Charley runs away with him. The novel is an »unadorned portrait of American life« [The Guardian] and utilizes moving and authentic language to tell a story of the not-always-sunny American way of life.
