Call to Action: Translation needs Funding

Übersetzte Bücher des 24. ilb

The Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media (BKM) has recently decided to cut funding for translations by 30%. Translation in Germany relies on funding. Many books are only published in German because of the availability of government grants that can be used to pay translation fees. Literary translations are central to us as an international literature festival. 90% of our literary events deal with translated literature. As a festival, we therefore strongly appeal to the BKM to maintain the current level of funding. In the era of AI, it is important to emphasize how irreplaceable the human work is that goes into translations.
