Wolfgang Thierse is a German politician (SPD) and cultural policy figure. He studied German philology and cultural studies at Humboldt University of Berlin. From 1998 to 2005 he was President of the German Bundestag, and until 2013 its Vice President. His publications include «Mit eigener Stimme sprechen» (1992) and «Zukunft Ost» (2001). For his commitment to German-German understanding, he received the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit in 1999, the Theodor Heuss Prize in 2001, and the Kulturgroschen of the German Cultural Council in 2016. Wolfgang Thierse lives in Berlin.
