born in 1971 in Andernach, studied comparative literature and art history in Bonn, Paris and Berlin. His début novel was »Meine nachtblaue Hose« (2000; tr: My Midnight-Blue Trousers). In 2013 he won the Leipzig Book Fair Prize for »Leben« (tr: Life). In 2014 he was Friedrich Dürrenmatt Professor of World Literature at the University of Bern. His new book is »Der vergessliche Riese« (2019; tr: The Forgetful Giant). He lives in Berlin.
