Thomas Korsgaard

Thomas Korsgaard, born in Viborg, Denmark, in 1995, studied Nordic languages and literature at Aarhus University without completing his studies.

In 2017, at the age of 21, he published his debut novel »Hvis der skulle komme et menneske forbi« (tr: If a Human Should Happen to Pass By), the first part of an autobiographically inspired trilogy about Tue, who lives with his parents and two siblings on a farm in Nørre Ørum in Jutland, a »suburb of darkness, squeezed between countless other insignificant villages«. Money is tight, the mother is depressed after a stillbirth, the father is prone to violence, and amid all this, Tue discovers his homosexuality.

In the second part of the episodically narrated trilogy, published in 2019 under the title »En dag vil vi grine af det« (tr: One Day We Will Laugh about It), an unexpected windfall befalls Tue’s family. But can money alone change the lives of the marginalized family for the better?

The third and final part was published in 2021 under the title »Man skulle nok have været der« (tr: You Probably Should Have Been There). Tue now lives alone but loses his apartment. A return to his dysfunctional family is out of the question, so he sells newspaper subscriptions on the street. At night, he sneaks into the editorial building, where he secretly sleeps and meets Victoria, who invites him to her home, where he briefly experiences what it can mean to have a family.

Korsgaard’s trilogy sold 300,000 copies in Denmark alone. The author was awarded the De Gyldne Laurbær literary prize for the third part in 2021. In the same year, he received the Otto B. Lindhardt Prize for his literary work.

In addition to his novels, Korsgaard has also published the short story collection »Tyverier« (2019; tr: Thefts) and three children’s books together with Frida Brygmann.
According to »Børsen«, it is »Thomas Korsgaard’s trademark (…) to write with ease about the difficult things in life«.

The author lives in Copenhagen.
