Thomas Demand is a German artist known for his large-format photographs of life-size paper and cardboard reconstructions based on images from the mass media or his own archive. His work challenges the notion of photography as an objective medium and explores the gap between reality and representation. He studied in Munich, Düsseldorf, and at Goldsmiths College in London, where he earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in 1994. Beginning in 1990, he shifted his focus from sculpture to photographic art. His solo exhibitions have included presentations at the MAK in Vienna and the Fondazione Prada. Thomas Demand lives in Berlin and Los Angeles.
