Biography
Katharina Barley, born in Cologne in 1968, is a German politician and lawyer. She joined the SPD in 1994 and has been a member of the party executive since 2021. Barley was a member of the German Bundestag from 2013-2019 and held the office of Federal Minister for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth from 2017-2018. In March 2018, she was appointed Federal Minister of Justice and Consumer Protection. In July 2019 she became a Member of the European Parliament, serving as its Vice-President ever since. She was standing as the SPD’s lead candidate in the 2024 European elections.
