Biography
was born in Hannover in 1957. He made his breakthrough as a musical conductor with Franz Schreker’s »Der ferne Klang« (The Distant Sound) at the Brussels Opera in 1988. From 1997 to 2005, he was director of the Hamburg State Opera. Afterward, he was chief conductor in Amsterdam and, since 2007, he has been principal conductor for the German Symphony Orchestra in Berlin. His first book, »Keine Angst vor neuen Tönen« (t: No fear of new notes), was published in 2005. In 2009, he published »Vorhang auf!« (t: Raise the curtain), a guide to opera. Metzmacher lives in Berlin.
