From 1981, he spent two years as a researcher at the University of Basel before he returned to the ETH Zürich. Weissert has been given the title Professor of Sedimentary Geology at ETH Zürich in 1993. His main research areas are sedimentary geology and earth history, palaeoclimatology as well as alpine geology.
