Hassan Hammad was born in Cairo in 1961 and studied Arabic language and literature. In 2002 he graduated with a dissertation on the use of irony in Nagib Machfuz’s stories. Hammad has been living in Switzerland since 1999, where he founded the Lisan publishing house in 2004 and, two years later, the magazine of the same name. Lisan is committed to the translation and dissemination of modern Arabic literature, and especially the work of young Arabic-language authors. Hammad is chief editor at Lisan, both the publishing house and the magazine.
