born in 1973 in Flörsheim, he is a writer, journalist, and publicist. From 2007 to 2015, he was an editor at taz. Since 2015, he has been a correspondent and author for Welt24, part of the Axel Springer publishing group. He has served as spokesperson for PEN Berlin since its founding. His imprisonment in Turkey in 2017/18 for his journalistic work drew international attention, an experience he recounted in his 2019 book »Agentterrorist – Eine Geschichte über Freiheit und Freundschaft, Demokratie und Nichtsodemokratie« [tr.: Agentterrorist – A Story about Freedom and Friendship, Democracy and Non-Democracy]. He has received numerous awards for his work, including the Kurt Tucholsky Prize [2011], the Theodor Wolff Prize [2017], and the Prize for Freedom and Future of the Media [2017]. Yücel lives in Berlin.
