Aleida Assmann, born in Bethel, Bielefeld, North Rhine-Westphalia, in 1947, is Professor Emeritus of English and Literary Studies at the University of Konstanz, and whose work has focused on the history of memory. She has received numerous awards, including the A. H. Heineken Prize for History (2014), the Balzan Prize, together with her husband Jan Assmann (2017), and the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade (2018). In 2020, she published her book »Die Wiedererfindung der Nation. Warum wir sie fürchten und warum wir sie brauchen« (tr: The Reinvention of the Nation: Why We Fear It and Why We Need It). In 2024, together with Jan Assmann, she published the book »Gemeinsinn. Der sechste, soziale Sinn« (tr: Public Spirit: The Sixth, Social Sense).
