born in 1988 in Cairo, Ahmed Awny is an Egyptian author and editor. After completing a degree in mechanical engineering, he studied Creative Writing at the American University in Cairo and screenwriting in Morocco. His main interests lie in social movements, political propaganda, and representations of Oriental masculinity. In 2010, he published the short story collection »Qalaq Muzmin« [Chronic Anxiety], followed in 2019 by his first novel »Jawa’iz lel abtal« [engl. »Some Achieve Greatness«], which was awarded the Sawiris Cultural Prize for Best Novel of the Year. He has been a Writer in Residence at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris and participated in the »International Literary Dialogue«, an initiative of the Austrian Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs. Ahmed Awny currently lives in Berlin, where he is working on a book that combines biography and political analysis by exploring the fragile dynamics of brother-sister relationships in Egypt. For this work-in-progress, he was awarded a fellowship from Culture Resource [»Al-Mawred Al-Thaqafy«]. He is also part of the literary platform »Weiter Schreiben«, which supports authors from war and crisis regions.
