Daniel Schreiber was born in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in 1977. He is a writer, translator, and columnist. As an author, he published the Susan-Sontag biography »Geist und Glamour« (2007; Eng. »Susan Sonntag: A Biography«, 2014) as well as four extremely successful volumes of essays in which he interweaves his personal memories and experiences with perspectives from philosophy, sociology, and psychology. In an unconditionally literary tone that nevertheless makes his own vulnerability palpable, he circles around various topics: »Nüchtern. Über das Trinken und das Glück« (2014; tr: Sober: On Drinking and Happiness) is about his alcohol addiction, but also about dealing with addiction in our society. In »Zuhause. Die Suche nach dem Ort, an dem wir leben wollen« (2017; tr: Home: The Search for the Place Where We Want to Live), Daniel Schreiber explores the conditions of belonging and connectedness: »An elegantly written, inspiring meditation on a difficult concept in a world that is becoming increasingly scary for many people«, wrote »Der Standard«. »Allein« (2021; Eng. »Alone«, 2023), published during the coronavirus pandemic, deals with the experience of loneliness and became an international bestseller: »A truly intoxicatingly clever essay« (Denis Scheck). In »Die Zeit der Verluste« (2023: The Time of Losses), Daniel Schreiber reflects on dwindling certainties, lost securities and the fundamental human experience of having to say goodbye, based on the death of his father. The »Süddeutsche Zeitung« called Daniel Schreiber »one of the most interesting essayists in our country, because he repeatedly succeeds in circling around exemplary themes of our time from his own biography«. He regularly publishes a newsletter.
Daniel Schreiber lives in Berlin.
