Sara Lundberg
Sara Lundberg was born in Sweden in 1971. She completed a bachelor’s degree in theater and art at McDaniel College in Maryland, USA, and continued her education at the Swedish Academy of Fine Arts Konstfack and the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm. She has been working as an author and illustrator of children’s books since 2001. Her works have received numerous nominations and awards, including multiple nominations for the Nordic Council Literature Prize and two awards for the August Prize, Sweden’s most prestigious literary prize. In 2009, she received it for »Skriv om och om igen« [2009; tr: Write Over and Over Again] by Ylva Karlsson, Katarina Kuick and Lilian Bäckman, a creative text workshop in book form, for which Sara Lundberg produced the illustrations. In 2017, she received the August Prize for the picture book she wrote and illustrated, »Fågeln i mig flyger vart den vill« [2017; Eng. »The Bird Within Me«, 2020]. The book is based on the life of artist Berta Hansson, who was born in 1910 on a farm in a small village in northern Sweden and rebelled against conventions and expectations of women at the time with her dream of becoming an artist. »A beautiful, vital children’s book about art and life, which inspires readers to dare to follow their own bird wherever they want«, said the August Prize jury. Lundberg’s most recent publication is »Ingen utom jag« [2024; Eng. »Nobody but Me«], a summery, atmospherically illustrated picture book about childlike play and imaginative places of refuge in moments of being unobserved. Sara Lundberg was nominated for the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award in 2024.
She lives in Sweden.
