Gerald Knaus, born in Austria in 1970, is an expert in international politics, having studied in Oxford, Brussels, and Bologna. He has held a lectureship in economics at the State University of Chernivtsi, Ukraine, and is a regular lecturer on Southeast Europe at the NATO Defence College in Rome. He has held fellowships at the Harvard Kennedy School in the United States and the Institute for Human Sciences (IWM) in Vienna. Knaus is the founding chairman of the European Stability Initiative (ESI) think tank and has written film scripts and reports that led to the EU-Turkey Statement on Migration (2016) and the uncovering of the »Caviar Diplomacy« corruption scandal at the Council of Europe (2017). His books include »Bulgaria« (1996), »Can Intervention Work?” (2011) with Rory Stewart, the Spiegel bestseller »Welche Grenzen brauchen wir?« (2020, tr: What Borders Do We Need?) and »Wir und die Flüchtlinge« (2022, tr: We and the Refugees). He currently lives in Berlin.
