Carolin Emcke was born in Mülheim an der Ruhr in 1967. The PhD graduate in philosophy and author was an editor at »Der Spiegel« magazine from 1998 to 2006, for which she worked as a war reporter from numerous crisis regions. Her book »Von den Kriegen« (2004) was awarded the Ernst Bloch Award for most promising young author. Eighteen years after the murder of her godfather Alfred Herrhausen by the RAF she wrote the essay »Stumme Gewalt«.
