Because of its shared border with Syria, it is the country housing the majority of the Syrian refugees (more then 2 million), even though they rarely come to Turkey directly but rather enter the country through Lebanon.&nbsp; The EU hopes for better integration of Syrian refugees into Turkish society in order to stop them from travelling further and from entering EU countries. On March 20<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;2016, the EU-Turkey refugee deal came into effect, which binds Turkey to take back all refugees who entered the EU illegally from Turkey. In return, the EU is considering whether it will lift the visa requirement currently needed by Turkish citizens when travelling to the EU, as well as continuing the negotiations of Turkey\u2019s admission into the EU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Participating author: Ece Temelkuran<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"230\" height=\"346\" src=\"https:\/\/literaturfestival.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Tuerkei.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-47503\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ece Temlkuran was born in Izmir, Turkey in 1973. Before finishing her law studies at the University of Ankara in 1995, Temelkuran started to work as a journalist for the oldest Turkish newspaper \u00bbCumhuryet\u00ab, and published her first book \u00bbB\u00fct\u00fcn Kad\u0131nlar\u0131n Kafas\u0131 Kar\u0131\u015f\u0131kt\u0131r\u00ab (\u00bbWomen Are All Confused\u00ab) in 1996. As a political journalist she has worked for several Turkish news papers, for example \u00bbMilliyet\u00ab and \u00bbBirG\u00fcn\u00ab, as well as for foreign newspapers such as \u00bbThe Guardian\u00ab and \u00bbLe Monde Diplomatique\u00ab. Temelkuran\u2019s investigative reporting and publications on controversial topics such as the Kurdish conflict, the women\u2019s movement and political prisoners have been honoured with numerous awards, including the German government\u2019s Journalist of the Year award (1996) and the Pen for Peace (2001). Her debut novel was published in 2010 and is named \u00bbMuz Sesleri\u00ab (Engl.: \u00bbBanana Sounds\u00ab), and her second novel \u00bbD\u00fc\u011f\u00fcmlere \u00dcfleyen Kad\u0131nlar\u00ab (En. \u00bbThe Women Who Blow on Knots\u00ab), which was translated into twenty-two languages, was published in 2013.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A more detailled biography can be found\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/literaturfestival.com\/en\/authors\/ece-temelkuran\/\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Turkey &#8211; Photographs by Davor Konjikusic<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><strong>In 2016, during\u00a0the\u00a0great influx of refugees\u00a0into Europe,\u00a0the Croatian photographer Davor Konjikusic went to the Hungarian border and used\u00a0the\u00a0border police&#8217;s thermovision camera to take these photos.\u00a0While the refugee\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0i.e the immigrant\u00a0in the wider bio-political context\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0is nothing but a body, a\u00a0&#8220;homo sacer&#8221;\u00a0to the police apparatus,\u00a0Konjikusic\u00a0created the\u00a0works of\u00a0art\u00a0to humanize the bodies. These photos\u00a0were\u00a0exhibited along with the sound recordings in\u00a0Davor Konjikusic&#8217;s\u00a0&#8220;Aura&#8221; project in 2016\u00a0(more information about which\u00a0can be found\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/davorko.net\/#\/aura-f37\/\">here<\/a>). The Turkish author Ece Temelkuran, who recently had to flee her home country,\u00a0also\u00a0appears in these photos.
