Occupancy rose from 80 to 85 per cent compared with the previous year.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>FESTIVAL HIGHLIGHTS<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among the best-attended events was the sold-out launch of the new series <strong>\u00abSatzwechsel\u00bb<\/strong> in cooperation with the Berliner Philharmoniker: on 7 September, Nobel laureate in literature <strong>Han Kang<\/strong> presented her essay collection \u00abLight and Thread\u00bb in dialogue with chamber music. At \u00abThe Art of Writing\u00bb on 10 September, <strong>Christian Kracht<\/strong> and <strong>Katie Kitamura<\/strong> discussed the influences on and common ground between their works. Booker Prize winner <strong>Douglas Stuart<\/strong> presented his new novel \u00abJohn of John\u00bb on 4 September, and on 5 September <strong>Dave Eggers<\/strong> appeared live in Berlin for the first time with \u00abContrapposto\u00bb. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A total of <strong>25 events were sold out<\/strong>, <strong>11 of them in the Young Program<\/strong>. Full houses included \u00abLust auf Liebe\u00bb with <strong>Dana Vowinckel<\/strong> and <strong>Ruth-Maria Thomas<\/strong>, the evening \u00abPolitik im Exil\u00bb at the Documentation Centre for Displacement, Expulsion, Reconciliation, and the premiere of <strong>Cornelia Funke\u2019<\/strong>s picture book \u00abWo Feen Nester bauen und Kobolde aus B\u00fcchern schl\u00fcpfen\u00bb as part of the first-ever Lesesause. In the Young Program, readings by <strong>\u00d6zge Samanc\u0131<\/strong>, <strong>Sydney Smith<\/strong>, <strong>Delphine Minoui<\/strong> and <strong>Don Pablo Mulemba<\/strong> were among those that attracted the largest audiences.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Events featuring new voices, some of them appearing in Berlin for the first time, were also in particularly high demand: they were frequently sold out and clearly exceeded expected audience numbers \u2013 among them <strong>Maria Reva<\/strong>\u2019s presentation of her debut novel \u00abEndling\u00bb, <strong>Tatiana \u021a\u00eebuleac<\/strong> and <strong>Ena Katarina Haler<\/strong>\u2019s dialogue on post-socialist storytelling at \u00abAuf den Ruinen der V\u00e4ter\u00bb, and <strong>Daniela Catrileo<\/strong>\u2019s reading of her novels \u00abPi\u00f1en\u00bb and \u00abChilco\u00bb.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Interest was also strong online: <strong>12 events were streamed<\/strong> and have so far been viewed <strong>more than 13,500 times<\/strong>. The most-viewed was the discussion \u00abDer Streit um das Recht: Zur Lage der Debattenkultur in Deutschland\u00bb with Frauke Brosius-Gersdorf and Julia Reuschenbach, which has already been watched 4,173 times. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>THEMATIC FOCUS<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Under this year\u2019s motto \u00abYou are born with your face turned everywhere\u00bb, the 26th International Literature Festival Berlin celebrated reading as an act of radical openness that can open new perspectives in times of polarization and populism. At the same time, the festival\u2019s debates returned again and again to the value of literature as a medium of conscious attention and as an antidote to the digital overload caused by social media and AI: <\/p>\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00abWhat\u2019s really changed is the degradation of our collective attention with the rise of the phone and the screen and the algorithm (\u2026) to read for an hour without bathing myself in blue light feels like an achievement (\u2026) I really do think everything in the culture is antithetical to the kind of attention that literature solicits and depends upon, and I also think that makes it all the more precious.\u00bb  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-right wp-block-paragraph\">BEN LERNER AT THE 26TH ILB<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Ben Lerner<\/strong>\u2019s observation, made while presenting his novel \u00abTranscription\u00bb, summed up the guiding questions shared by many events: What role does reading play in today\u2019s economy of distraction? What does human writing mean in the age of artificial intelligence? And what political futures are emerging? In its \u00abDialogue &amp; Discussions\u00bb series, the festival also took up the debates of the present, for instance in \u00abDer Streit um das Recht\u00bb with <strong>Frauke Brosius-Gersdorf<\/strong>, <strong>Julia Reuschenbach<\/strong>, <strong>J\u00fcrgen Kaube<\/strong> and <strong>Sandra Kegel<\/strong>, in \u00abZukunft Deutschland: AfD an der Macht?\u00bb with <strong>Justus Bender<\/strong> and <strong>Heike Kl\u00fcver<\/strong>, and in \u00abThink Big! Tech Bros und KI-Revolution\u00bb with <strong>Aya Jaff<\/strong>, <strong>Marie Kilg<\/strong> and <strong>Wolfgang Ullrich<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>NEW FORMATS<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ILB expanded its Curator in Residence program into a \u00abfestival within the festival\u00bb: across ten events, <strong>Jeet Thayil<\/strong> brought together art forms and cultures in a \u00abjam session\u00bb. For the first time in the festival\u2019s history, a specially assembled jazz trio \u2013 the ILB House Band led by <strong>Diego Pi\u00f1era<\/strong> \u2013 accompanied authors on stage. The Poetry Night returned in a two-part format that first carried poetry to changing venues in the neighborhood of the Haus der Berliner Festspiele and then brought it to the stage.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Haus der Berliner Festspiele was once again the festival center. From the foyer, radio3\u2019s festival radio broadcasted live and captured the voices of authors and visitors. As in previous years, the Festival Kitchen was a popular meeting place for exchange and conversation. The Dussmann book table was again well frequented by visitors, matching the level of the highly successful previous year.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ilberlin.sharepoint.com\/:f:\/s\/ILB-PR-Materials\/EvJRA5eoVEdNqlnRG-upeDcBT9NVGqd_brPm_SxIAbs2Cg?e=YmtgAG\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Download press images 2026<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/literaturfestival.com\/en\/livestreams\/\">Livestream recordings 2026<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.radiodrei.de\/themen\/literatur\/ilb\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Broadcasts on radio3<\/a><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>YOUNG PROGRAM<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This year, the Young Program of the 26th International Literature Festival Berlin reached more than 11,000 visitors \u2013 almost 3,000 more children and young people than in 2025, an increase of 32 per cent on the previous year. 100 participants, including 18 authors, shaped 33 events and 26 workshops. Thousands of children from all school years attended the readings and workshops. \u00d6zge Samanc\u0131 opened the festival for the next generation of readers with her speech \u00abThe slow superpower\u00bb. Among the highlights was the first-ever Lesesause on 6 September, a celebration for children and their families with readings by Cornelia Funke, Dave Eggers and other guests, hands-on activities, and
