Lorenzo Mattotti was born in Brescia in 1954. While still a student of architecture at the University of Venice he started drawing comics for magazines and publishers. After graduating from university he dedicated himself totally to this genre. Together with other Italian comics designers he founded the \u00bbValvoline\u00ab in 1983. In its works the group transcends the boundaries of comics, illustration and independent art.
Following his first important productions \u2013 \u00bbIncidenti\u00ab and \u00bbDottor Nefasto\u00ab (1981) \u2212 Mattotti created his visionary masterpiece \u00bbFuochi\u00ab (1984; Eng. \u00bbFires\u00ab, 1986), which won him international acclaim and awards. The book launched his career, and paved the way for his essential and extremely evocative style. Mattotti in his own words: \u00bbI gave up the notion of the comic strip as a cinematographic experience, which has been linked with the idea that you have to show everything, every single movement, etc., in order to allow for a greater possibility of interpretation by the reader.\u00ab Mattotti\u2019s coherence and stylistic persistence also shows in numerous other works, including \u00bbLa zona fatua\u00ab (1993; Eng. \u00bbMurmur\u00ab, 1989), \u00bbL\u2019uomo alla finestra\u00ab (1992; Eng. \u00bbThe Man at the Window \u00ab, 1992), \u00bbStigmate\u00ab (1999; Eng. \u00bbStigmata\u00ab, 2000), \u00bbJekyll & Hyde\u00ab (2002; Eng.. \u00bbDoctor Jekyll & Mister Hyde\u00ab, 2002), and \u00bbRumore della brina\u00ab (2003; Eng. \u00bbThe Rumour of the Frost \u00ab, 2003). The artist reverts to other styles and art forms, but also tries new options and trusts in innovative approaches. His books have been translated into many languages and are published worldwide.
Mattotti is also a successful graphic designer. He has published in international newspapers and journals, including \u00bbLiberation\u00bb, \u00bbLe Monde\u00bb, \u00bbCorriere della Sera\u00bb, \u00bbS\u00fcddeutsche Zeitung\u00bb and \u00bbThe New Yorker\u00ab, and produced illustrations for famous fashion designers. He also develops advertising campaigns, covers and posters (including the official poster for the Festival of Cannes in 2000). Mattotti is also an esteemed illustrator of children\u2019s books. He received the renowned Grand Prix di Bratislava for \u00bbEugenio\u00ab in 1993. His film works include one of the six episodes of \u00bbPeur(s) du noir\u00ab (2007) as well as his contributions for Wong Kar-Wai\u2019s film \u00bbEros\u00ab and productions by Soderbergh and Antonioni. His recent works include \u00bbScavando nell\u2019acqua\u00ab (2008), \u00bbAppunti sul paesaggio\u00ab (2008), \u00bbLe avventure di Pinocchio\u00ab (2008), and in a joint venture with Lou Reed \u00bbThe Raven\u00ab (2009). His adaptation of \u00bbH\u00e4nsel und Gretel\u00ab in the German language will see the light in 2011.
Mattotti has had several individual shows, e.g. in the Palazzo delle Esposizioni in Rome and the Frans Hals Museum in Haarlem. Together with Jerry Kramsky he was awarded the Will Eisner Prize for \u00bbJekyll & Hyde\u00ab in the USA. Lorenzo Mattotti is one of the most important and internationally famous Italian comic designers and graphic designers. He lives in Paris.<\/p>\n
