Kathryn Scanlan, born in 1980, is the author of the novels »AUG 9–FOG« (2019) and »Kick the Latch« (2022) — the latter was published in German as »Boxenstart« (trans. Jan Karsten) in 2024 — as well as the short story collection »The Dominant Animal« (2020). Her work has appeared in NOON, Granta, Fence, and The Paris Review. She studied painting and creative writing at the University of Iowa and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Her story »The Old Mill« was awarded the Iowa Review Fiction Prize in 2010. She is the recipient of the Windham-Campbell Literature Prize and an award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. In 2024, she also received the Gordon Burn Prize for »Kick the Latch«. Scanlan lives in Los Angeles. In 2025, she will be Writer in Residence in Chemnitz, the European Capital of Culture 2025.
