born 1957 in Mainpuri, India is a Hindi- and English-language novelist, dramatist, and literary theorist. She has authored novels, short stories, and scripts for theatrical performances. She a founding member of Vivadi, a Delhi-based group that stages plays and organises workshops and seminars on topics of contemporary interest. Her works have been translated into many languages from India and worldwide; she has also taken part in various international residencies and lectured at institutions all over the world. She is the winner of the International Booker Prize for 2022 for the English translation of her novel »Ret Samadhi« titled »Tomb of Sand« [tr. Daisy Rockwell], which also received the Warwick Prize for Literature in Translation. The novel’s French translation [»Ret Samadhi: Au-dela de la frontier«, tr. Annie Montaut] was shortlisted for the Emile Guimet Prize. In 2025, Shree is DAAD Artist-in-Residence in Berlin.
