An interpreter in the Swiss Immigration Office is confronted with the fates of foreigners who are looking for a better life. The narrative contains threads of memories of the protagonist's own childhood and youth: myths, legends and Biblical stories, as well as the fictitious diaries of the Russian chansonnette Izabella Jur'eva, whose biography spans the entire 20th century.
