On the eve of the Spanish Civil War, Ignacio meets the attractive American Judith. His wife learns of the relationship and attempts suicide. Amidst the increasingly tumultuous political situation, Ignacio searches for the shocked Judith in the streets of Madrid and only narrowly escapes being shot. He eventually meets her again in exile in the USA, and together they spend a final »night of memories«. Molina received the Spanish State Prize for Literature (Premio Nacional de Novela) in 1988 and 1992, and in 1991 he was awarded the most important Spanish literary prize, the Premio Planeta, for his novel »El jinete polaco« (tr: The Polish Rider).
