Andreas Kossert was born in Hannoversch Münden in 1970. He studied history, political science and Slavonic languages and literature in Germany, Scotland and Poland. Kossert did his doctorate on the subject of »Preußen, Deutsche oder Polen? Die Masuren im Spannungsverhältnis des deutsch-polnischen Konflikts« (t: Prussians, Germans or Poles? The Masurians in the context of the German-Polish conflict) at the Free University, Berlin. He has been a research associate at the German Historical Institute in Warsaw since 2001. In the summer semester of 2007 he was a guest professor at the Technical University, Dresden. Andreas Kossert is known to a wider reading public as the author of extensive accounts of themes from German history in Eastern Europe. In his works of non-fiction »Masuren. Ostpreußens vergessener Süden« (2001; t: Masuria: East Prussia’s forgotten south) and »Ostpreußen. Geschichte und Mythos« (2005; t: East Prussia: history and myth), he uncovers the European dimension of these regions, which are also important for Poles, Lithuanians and Russians. In 2008 he published »Kalte Heimat. Die Geschichte der deutschen Vertriebenen nach 1945« (t: Cold homeland: the history of the displaced Germans after 1945), the first complete overview of this subject, in which Kossert critically brings to light the role of Eastern European refugees and their integration in West and East Germany.

Kossert’s works are socio-historical in their approach, continually presenting literature as a mirror of historical and social trends. With their modern, multi-layered take on the world, his works have sparked a broad media response.
