In 1979 the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan. Since then, the Afghanistan has been the setting for many violent encounters, culminating in US military intervention after 9/11. Millions of dollars have since been spent on the war, soldiers from all over the world (including Germany) have been stationed there, and thousands of people (especially civilians) have been injured or killed.
Ahmed Rashid is one of the world’s most important journalists reporting on the region. In his speech he will take a look at the bigger picture, and give a prognosis for Afghanistan post-2014, when international troops are scheduled to have left the country.
Michael Koch of the German government will participate in the debate.
