Very few countries have made more headlines in the last century than Pakistan, especially since 9/11. Founded in 1947, proclaimed as the first Islamic state in 1956, Pakistan is the most important retreat area of the Taliban. The scholar and journalist Ahmed Rashid, who currently lives in Lahore, has been writing reference works about the Taliban since the late 1990s. Fundamentalist views are popular in some of the 18.000 Koran schools, which contribute to the radicalisation of the country. The blasphemy laws of 1986 spark constant clashes and confrontations, and finally cause many people to take justice into their own hands. In his speech Rashid will address Pakistan’s perspectives and the western politics concerning the country.
