It’s quiet and dark inside the house. Only the little boy and his father are still here, his mother is gone. Fortunately, the father does his best to protect his son from loneliness. He puts his arm around his shoulder and leads him outside to watch the shooting stars fall and feed the little red birds. How is one meant to continue when an important person just isn’t there anymore? EG KAN IKKJE SOVE NO addresses the topics of loss, grief and loneliness with warmth and compassion. With its sensitive writing and emotive illustrations, the book was nominated, among other things, for the Deutsche Jugendliteraturpreis in 2011. Øyvind Torseter is a first-time guest at the ilb and will be presenting the book for the first time in Berlin. “Torseters illustrations are stages on paper” (ZEIT).

The protagonist of this picture book has just moved into a new apartment and is in the process of unpacking his boxes when he discovers a hole in the wall. But it doesn’t stay in one place. It moves around, seemingly playing hide-and-seek. Sometimes it’s in the floor, sometimes in the closet, and then back in the wall. A wild chase begins … until our hero finally manages to catch it and bring it into a laboratory – where further examination begins. HULLET demonstrates the wonderful things in life that have no explanation. The hole, by the way, is real – it was punched through the pages of the book and the cover – and turns the book into a unique tactile experience, as well. Oyvind Torseter, first-time guest at the ilb, will be presenting HULLET for the first time in Germany. “A big story about a small Nothing” (Judith Scholter, DIE ZEIT).
