Can Dündar, editor-in-chief of the Turkish newspaper “Cumhuriyet”, was arrested along with the paper’s Ankara correspondent Erdem Gül in 2015. Recep Tayyip Erdogan personally arraigned Dündar and publically called for a punishment of two life sentences. Both journalists were accused of espionage and revealing state secrets, as well as helping a terrorist organization. The event under fire: publishing photographic evidence of government arms shipments to radical Islamist rebel groups in Syria. Dündar and Gül were held in custody awaiting trial and later sentenced to prison. In TUTUKLANDIK, Dündar tells of his research and of how publishing the photographs changed his life. Can Dündar will be speaking about TUTUKLANDIK as a part of this year’s ilb project “International Congress for Democracy and Freedom”. “These three hundred pages, written in the Turkish prison Silivri, are an important record of contemporary history” (Rainer Hermann, FAZ).
