Everyone’s a stranger almost everywhere on earth – everywhere except at home. But even in his hometown, 15-year-old Béni feels like an outsider. Born to Algerian parents in Lyon, he wishes he could be like all the other boys in his class: French. In order to fit in, he keeps his real name secret and pretends his parents aren’t Algerian… and yet he can’t escape the clash between French and Arabic tradition. Based on the author’s own experiences, BÉNI OU LE PARADIS PRIVÉ discusses tolerance, racism and the search for belonging. Azouz Begag has been a guest at the festival ten times since 2002 and will be presenting his novel in the context of this year’s “International Congress for Democracy and Freedom”. “Begag tells his story with humor and an impressive ability to take a step back from the narrative” (Beate Simon, Tagesspiegel).
