Strength has a stereotypical image: militaristic, heterosexual, often Caucasian, and male. In the past decades, women, people of colour, and members of sexual minorities have successfully pushed back against this hegemony. Nevertheless, reactionary and chauvinistic attitudes are once again resurgent. How can we protect the democratic achievements and rights that have been secured – and does it fall to women to lead this struggle?


STEFANIE LOHAUS [D] is a co-founder and co-editor-in-chief of the feminist magazine »Missy Magazine«. She is a freelance journalist and author. In 2015, she published »Papa kann auch stillen« [tr. Dad Can Breast-Feed Too] together with her partner.


INES KAPPERT [D] directs the Gunda Werner Institute for Feminism and Gender Democracy at the Heinrich Böll Foundation. Previously she was an editor at the »taz«.

LAURIE PENNY [GB] became internationally known for her book »Meat Market. Female Flesh Under Capitalism« [2011]. The journalist and author has published six books and writes for the »Guardian« and the »Independent«, among others.

SHARON DODUA OTOO [GB/ D] is a writer, activist, and editor of the book series »Witnessed«. Her texts focus on themes of feminism and racism. She won the 2016 Ingeborg-Bachmann Prize.

SADAF SAAZ [GB/ Bangladesh] is a poet, writer, women’s rights advocate, and entrepreneur. She is the director and co-founder of the literary festival »Dhaka Lit Fest«.
