The election of Donald Trump as President has revealed grave weaknesses in the American political system and yet the resistance against Trump suggests that, in a sense, the democratic system is still functioning. Is this a »dictator without a dictatorship« as the writer Eliot Weinberger frames it? What possibilities exist for limiting Trump’s influence and damage – not only in the USA, but in the rest of the world?


CHRISTIAN LAMMERT [D] is Professor of North American Politics and Policy at the John F. Kennedy Institute at the Freie Universität Berlin.


NANCY FONER [USA] is a sociologist and Professor of Sociology at Hunter College in New York, member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the author of numerous books. The focus of her research is on immigration.

MAAZA MENGISTE [Ethiopia/ USA] is a novelist and essayist whose themes include migration, war, photography, and human rights. Her second novel, set during Fascist Italy's invasion of Ethiopia, is forthcoming.

ELIOT WEINBERGER [USA] is an award-winning essayist and translator. He gained recognition in Germany for his works »Karmic Traces« [2000], »What I Heard About Iraq« [2005], and »An Elemental Thing« [2007], and performances at the ilb and his publications in Lettre International.
