Authoritarian Russia uses foreign interventions to distract from the disastrous situation at home. The provocations by its military in Syria and Ukraine threaten the fragile balance of international relations and cyber-attacks perpetrated by Russia are suspected to have undermined democratic processes in the USA and Great Britain. How can democracy – in Russia and elsewhere – withstand this level of pressure?


VOLKER WEICHSEL [D] is a political scientist, translator and editor of the magazine »Osteuropa«, a monthly dealing with politics and culture in Central and Eastern Europe.


VIKTOR EROFEEV [Russia] is a writer and critic of contemporary Russian politics. His novel »Russian Beauty« [1990] has been translated into more than 20 languages.

RALF FÜCKS [D] is a politician [Alliance 90/The Greens] and was on the board of the Heinrich Böll Foundation for many years. His book »Freiheit verteidigen - Wie wir den Kampf um die offene Gesellschaft gewinnen« [tr. Defending Freedom – How We Can Win the Fight for an Open Society] was published in 2017.

ZHANNA NEMTSOVA [Russia/ D] founded the Boris Nemtsov Foundation for Freedom in 2015 in memory of her murdered father. Since 2015, she has been a journalist for »Deutsche Welle« in Bonn.

MICHAIL RYKLIN [Russia/ D] is a writer and Professor of Philosophy at the Academy of Sciences in Moscow. His publications are dedicated to the analysis of systems of terror in Russia.
